Welcome to Bowie Elementary....
BOWIE ELEMENTARY DRESS CODE 2007-2008
The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, to prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards.  Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
 1. Shirts shall be buttoned appropriately and belts shall be buckled.
2.      Shoulder straps on girls/boys’ shirts and dresses must be at least 2 inches width, must cover undergarment and be fitted under the arm.  No skin may show when arms are raised.
3.      Hair shall be cleaned and well groomed.  Unnatural hair color (red, pink, blue, etc.) will not be allowed.  Boy’s hair shall be out of the eyes, no lower than the bottom of the earlobe on the sides, and to the base of the neck in the back.  Boys shall not braid their hair, wear ponytails, or Mohawks.  Any hairstyle that is determined to be a distraction by the administration will be prohibited.
4.      Skirt length shall be determined by what is appropriate for sitting and standing.  A general rule will be that a skirt must be longer than the tips of the fingers with arms extended to their side (fingertip rule).
5.      Shoes with cleats may not be worn.  Flip-flops or rubber shower sandals are not considered appropriate.  Children are involved in physical activity throughout the day.  If your child wears shoes that are not designed for such activity, he/she may need to bring a pair of shoes to change into before such activity.
6.      Shorts may be worn at any time during the school year as long as they meet the fingertip rule or have a 5 inch inseam.  Tights worn in place of appropriate shorts or trousers are not permitted.
7.      Tank tops, midriff tops, or backless dresses/tops are not permitted.
8.      Net shirts, shirts split to the side, shirts displaying inappropriate or derogatory messages, slogans, pictures, or advertisement which promote alcohol, tobacco, drugs, acts of violence, guns, weapons, death, dismemberment, disfiguration, or other lewd, offensive, vulgar items are specifically prohibited.  This includes shirts depicting wrestling.
9.      Boys and girls shall not wear hats, caps, or any headwear in the building with exception of school wide events.
10.  Boys shall not wear ear jewelry – no dangling earrings for girls, stud type only.  Girls may not wear fake fingernails, makeup or glitter lip-gloss.
11.  Sunglasses are not worn at school unless medically prescribed.
12.  Baggy pants, chains, or any clothing or item that has gang related significance is prohibited.  No saggy or torn pants will be permitted.
13.  No permanent tattoos will be visible.
14.  No body piercing jewelry will be permitted except in girl’s ears.
15.  Any prohibited item will be confiscated.  Parents will be called to pick them up.
16.  Parents shall be notified if students fail to meet these guidelines or whose appearance is disruptive to school activities.  The principal, or designee, has the authority to make the final decision concerning fads, etc., and to insure compliance with the dress code and grooming policy.
17.  Mums may not be worn at school.  The school will not accept the delivery of mums during homecoming.  We believe that this is a tradition more fitting for the older students, and it is disruptive to the leaning process at this level.
